Welcome to The Grove School’s website we hope that it offers you lots of useful information about our school.

Our website aims to paint a picture of our rich curriculum and versatile approach to whole school, class and individualised learning but is no substitute for a personal visit to experience the ethos and culture of the life of our school in action.

We are always happy to share our schools successes and achievements with visitors so please telephone to make an appointment if you are interested in seeing our school’s educational opportunities and provision.

PREPARATION FOR ADULTHOOD
We hosted our annual Preparation for Adulthood open afternoon at school on Monday 25 th September from 1-3pm. Each year this provides pupils, parents and carers the opportunity to meet and chat with many of the local provisions which can offer Education or Social Care packages at either Post 16 or post school.
Local provisions that kindly attended our event this year were: Shared Interests; Border Links; Northstar; Choices College; NCC Careers Guidance; NCC Learning and Organisational Development. We also provided three laptops displaying the prospectus and websites for: Kirkley Hall College; Dilston College; Borders College. Pupils, parents and carers were able to look at all the display stands, ask questions and collect leaflets and information which will hopefully support them towards making transition decisions in the future.
Oak Class made their delicious traybakes again and refreshments were served throughout the afternoon so that parents could enjoy a social catch up too. We will be hosting the event again next September and hope to have even more local provisions there to support everyone in the decision making process.

Berwick Holiday Park

Cherry Class have developed a community link with Berwick Holiday Park and have been participating in outdoor learning activities with Brian O’Brien, the Park Ranger, on a Monday from 10.00am until 2.00pm.

Week 1 - We visited the park and met Brian the Park Ranger and Dylan his line manager. We had a hot chocolate in the meetings room and discussed the types of activities we would be doing. Brian showed us his Ranger room and took us around all of the leisure facilities at the park.

Week 2 – We were extremely busy in week 2! We made our own ‘A’ frame wooden shelter following a demonstration from Brian. We worked as a team, safely and carefully, taking turns to drag the wood over and place it correctly to interlock it. Brian showed us how to light a fire in the wild. We all had to practise as it was really tricky but we all lit a fire successfully using Firesteel sets. Brian then showed us how to dig a hole and build a camp fire. We got to roast marshmallows on the fire and make S’mores which were delicious! We also tidied up Brian’s outdoor woodland area which was a bit messy after the last storm. We used Brian’s tools and equipment to rake, tidy and chop. He showed us how to saw branches safely with a sharp hand saw.

Week 3 – We made wooden bird houses in week 3. We all patiently took turns to work with Brian to measure and saw the wood. We used a special drill to drill the hole for the bird which was very hard work. We took turns using a hammer and nails to put the bird house together and Brian showed us how to use a special waterproof felt on the roof to create a hinge for the roof to open and close for cleaning. We were very proud of ourselves.

Cherry Class are excited to be going back to Berwick Holiday Park at the start of the new season in 2024 to do more outdoor learning activities with Brian.
